A new NBER study should be read by anyone deciding whether the problem RISEUP solves is real and growing. In "Boomerang College Kids," economists Stefania Albanesi, Rania Gihleb, and Ning Zhang tracked young college graduates across two decades, and the picture is stark.Unemployment for graduates aged 23 to 27 rose from 9% to 12%. Job mismatch, working in a role that does not require the degree they paid for, reached 52%, and those mismatched workers now earn far less than their matched peers. A generation moved back home: coresidence with parents climbed from 25% to 31%. The authors trace most of this to a single cause. The supply of matched jobs, roles that actually use a degree, has fallen, and that scarcity alone explains roughly two-thirds of the rise in both unemployment and living at home. The finding that should concern every parent and every young professional is quieter. The first job sets the trajectory. Graduates who started in a mismatched role earned significantly less years later. A weak start compounds into a smaller life. What the research lacks is a clear path forward. The market determines the number of quality jobs available, but it never provides guidance on how graduates can compete effectively, wait purposefully instead of settling, or transform a slow beginning into a powerful conclusion. This crucial knowledge has yet to be incorporated into any product. That is RISEUP@work. We cannot create matched jobs. We can give each graduate the tone, agency instead of anxiety, and the pace, deliberate development instead of drift, to land the right match sooner and escape the penalty of a poor first one.The convulsion is structural, and it is worsening. RISEUP is the operating system for the graduate caught inside it. Join us as an early backer.
