One of the questions we hear most often is, “What does ‘actionable’ mean in genomics?Many people assume it means a genetic finding that has a treatment. Sometimes it does, but that is only part of the picture.For example, there is a common chemotherapy drug that works well for most people but can be dangerous for a small number of patients. A change in a single gene can prevent the body from processing the drug normally, making a standard dose toxic. A genome test can identify that risk before treatment begins, allowing a physician to adjust the dose or choose a different therapy.That is just one example of an actionable finding. Actionability can also mean identifying someone who should begin cancer screening earlier, monitoring for an inherited heart condition before symptoms develop, choosing the safest medication, or recognizing a genetic risk that changes how a patient is cared for over time.Whether a finding is actionable depends on the specific genetic variant, the scientific evidence supporting it, and the patient's individual circumstances.
