If you caught our last Wefunder Update, you would have learned that Hempitecture has completed the first ever Environmental Product Declaration for hemp-based insulation in the United States.When Hempitecture was established, the thesis was simple: Natural fiber insulation materials can save on operational carbon by improving energy efficiency of built structures, while also storing carbon dioxide in the material itself. With the publication of this EPD, the thesis holds as more valid than ever. The EPD reports 2.603 kg CO₂ of biogenic carbon uptake per declared unit, equal to about 0.71 kg of carbon stored in the product. It also reports a net A1–A3 GWP-total of -0.80 kg CO₂e per declared unit for HempWool®.Compare that to Mineral Wool Insulation, which is responsible for an A1-A3 carbon footprint emission of +12.5 kg CO₂e.This independent, third-party verified EPD is the culmination of a multi-year effort of data collection, improving operational efficiency, working with suppliers to refine input data, and completing multiple iterations of Life Cycle Analysis according to ISO Methodologies.
