Last week we gathered with Tribal leaders, farmers, and community partners in Pendleton, Oregon to celebrate the partnerships at the center of Cairnspring’s Blue Mountain mill - our second facility and the first flour mill ever built on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The event celebrated a partnership rooted in shared values: stewardship of the land, food sovereignty, and long-term investment in rural economies. We heard from leaders of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, who spoke with honesty and conviction about the importance of building economic opportunity that aligns with cultural values. That evening we gathered for dinner, where Bobbie Conner, Director of the Tamástslikt Cultural Institute, reminded us why this work matters. She grounded us in the broader story of this land, from the gold rush and the railroad to the mass production of Russian wheat, known locally as “Umatilla Gold.” It’s a story of resilience, reclamation, and rebuilding food systems that nourish both people and place. Here is an excerpt from Bobbie’s moving speech:“This tribe does not do things overnight. We are deliberate, we are plan-driven, there are checks and balances all the way through it. And we might do things the hard way, but it usually turns out it’s the right way. And we’re glad to have patient partners, and patient investors, and patient farmers who are willing to get in on this story at the ground level.”The new mill features the same stone milling process as our Skagit mill, enhanced with advanced processing components to support 3X scale that allows us to serve more customers and more communities. But more than that, it represents a model for how regional food systems can grow with integrity, transparency, and purpose. If you’ve already invested in this vision, thank you. If you’re still considering it, our round is oversubscribed but there is still a limited window to get in. Invest or increase your investment today at wefunder.com/cairnspringmills
