We showed that our Shape Genie software can detect differences in red blood cells that are not infected by a malaria parasite but are floating next to cells that are infected by parasites. This is a move in the direction of a rapid, low-cost phone app that can detect signs of malaria infection using blood smears on a glass slide. For developing countries, glass slides and smart phone cameras are much cheaper than one-time use molecular kits for detecting malaria.
