Scientists grow mini-brains on a dish in order to study the biology of brain diseases and their responses to drugs. This is method is called "3D culture" or "organoid culture" and mimics the actual brain a lot better than growing cells as flat sheets in a dish. As the clump of cells develops from a random heap into a structured organoid that has folds similar to those seen in a real brain, the shape of the organoid changes dramatically. A current challenge that scientists face is that they are unable to precisely measure these important shape changes. That is, until now...In this pilot project, we showed that BrainScanology's patent-pending software, Shape Genie, is able to measure the shape of brain organoids better than any other technology. BrainScanology is poised to revolutionize the field of organoid biology, otherwise known was studying "organs in a chip."
