Every year we celebrate World Oceans Day, yet our oceans are still suffering from pollution. But no more excuses, the solution to ocean pollution is simpler than you think. Many have called for a reduction in plastic consumption to solve plastic pollution. But with the world population only increasing and more people rising out of poverty into consumer-oriented lifestyles, plastic packaged goods will inevitably grow.Others have called for improved waste management, however, it requires expensive upgrades which could take decades. Decades that we can not afford to leave our oceans vulnerable to the daily flow of plastic coming from rivers all over the world. But did you know, ~1000 rivers were found to account for 80% of the plastic in our oceans? This presented a simple solution to a complex problem.PANGEA went straight to the source of one of the major contributors to ocean pollution: Padang Indonesia, home to 3 of the world’s 1,000 dirtiest rivers. The Ocean Cleanup’s Interactive Map displaying 3 of the top 1000 river inputs in Padang, Indonesia. With the support of the PANGEA community, our team deployed 17 river barriers to neutralize these 3 rivers! Trash is captured by these barriers before they can reach the ocean, and the collected waste is cleaned, sorted, and recycled at a local waste management facility, creating a self-sufficient system. A Pangea river barrier in action in a tributary in Padang, Indonesia. After 2 years, not only have our barriers collected ~100,000 lbs of trash, they have also inspired systemic change. Just last week we were invited to the placement of new river barriers by the local government!Although reduced plastic consumption and improved waste management remain important in the fight against ocean pollution, let’s leverage the fast and cost effective tools to take action on a local level, AND drive the powerful change that this issue and its urgency demands. That's why we need your help to place river barriers in the rest of the world’s most polluted rivers. Join us in doing World Oceans Day justice, and invest in the future you want to see for our oceans by clicking HERE.
