Later this week we will begin the selection process for the first GMSO research vessel with whatever funds we have upon closing and what vessels are available on the market. We need to get away from $100+ million vessels that cost $50K/day to operate. When I was captain of those $100 million vessels at NOAA, I would see a 50' fishing vessels doing very similar work, right next to me, 100 miles offshore. A principle of GMSO is that you most often do not need a complicated, large research vessel. You need a $200K-$1M vessel that costs less than $10K/day to complete a lot of the same science.GMSO will be refitting used vessels for the first few ships in the fleet. Most will be very efficient hull designs such as one of our favorite catamarans shown here. Sailing vessels and biofuels will also be used to reduce our carbon footprint and reduce costs for the scientists. We have already started the design process for a solar augmented, diesel-electric hybrid vessel for the future fleet. Reducing any negative effects on the environment we study is a prime goal of GMSO. Insulating ourselves from increasing fuel costs doesn’t hurt either.As we close out this round of funding, I’d like to thank those that believe in what we are doing. We'll see you out on the water!
