In this time of war, Greenwater Marine Sciences Offshore (GMSO), has joined with recognized humanitarian organizations, Save Our Allies, and Samaritan’s Purse, in partnership with an extensive network of Ukrainian groups to create the Ukraine Safe Drinking Water Solutions Partnership. This partnership has been formed to support established Ukrainian water quality groups and experts to build a war-time network capable of field testing water sources, to determine which are safe, which can be safe with treatment, and which sources are too contaminated for consumption.GMSO, as part of the Ukraine Safe Drinking Water Solutions partnership, seeks to empower Ukrainians to identify clean water sources and implement water-treatment practices to produce clean water.Water is one of the basic necessities for life.Leveraging the already robust network of churches and community groups presently supplying truckloads of humanitarian aid, medical supplies and communication systems, our partnership intends to procure sufficient quantities of field-test kits to sustain comprehensive water testing in war affected areas. GMSO has developed the overall plan, identified the team members, and will be conducting the testing on larger bodies of water that require vessels, such as rivers and lakes. Access to potable water has been a challenge in most parts of Ukraine, but the war has exacerbated the problem. Huge swaths of the country can no longer obtain water clean enough to drink, even after boiling it. Russian aggression has resulted in destruction of water pumping stations, water mains and sewage treatment plants. Communities lack reagents for purification of their tap water. Air strikes and shelling continue to destroy or damage industrial facilities, oil depots, landfills and waste storage facilities throughout Ukraine. This destruction causes pollution of soil and water resources through the leakage of hazardous substances. The Ukraine Safe Drinking Water Solutions Partnership will provide proper water testing equipment and training to Ukrainian communities, as well as guidance and coordination to establish priorities and effective protocols. Initial efforts will quickly identify safe sources of water as well as identify areas without any potable water. Humanitarian aid groups and the Ukraine government’s emergency response and rebuilding efforts can then be appropriately focused on the areas most in need. The intention is to create a network to supplement the pre-war Ukrainian national capabilities.GMSO is a Benefit Corporation. Photo of GMSO, CEO G. With financial support for equipment and supplies, the Partnership is prepared to devote personnel to continue developing a water quality network, provide training and deliver critical sampling and analysis capability.
