Most bone researchers study with bone repair. This is because orthopedic surgeons spend the majority of their time fixing damaged bones. The process of a long bone repair has very little to do with the process of bone regeneration. Our bones cannot fully heal themselves. Yes, broken bones can be made functional, but seldom is a repaired bone as good as new.At OsNovum we are only interested in bone regeneration. For regeneration to occur, the bone must be as good as new, or it is not regeneration. So, when we inject OsNovum into a weakened bone, we are not repairing the bone--we are regenerating the bone.Is a regenerated osteoporotic bone of an 80-year-old just as strong as that bone was when the patient was 20 years old? After regeneration, is the bone that was missing heathier than any other bone in the patient’s body? There are many histological differences between normal bone and osteoporotic bone and osteoporotic bone has many easily identifiable characteristics. Osteoporotic bone has a significant reduction in the number of blood vessels. Type H capillaries in bone are the drivers of bone health as they harbor the stem cell niches that are necessary to maintain bone health. The shape and thickness of the mineralized portion of bone (trabeculae) are significantly diminished, lending to the loss of strength. There are fewer cells in the mineralized portion of osteoporotic bone that are needed for sensing when damage has occurred and when rebuilding is needed. All these debilitating features of bone are obvious in the microscope and all these are reversed after treatment with OsNovum. Is the bone regenerated by OsNovum the healthiest bone in the patient’s body? That is a definite yes. Is the bone regenerated by OsNovum as good as when the patient was 20? We don’t know yet, but we think we are pretty close.
