Hi everyone,I am Peter Shiao, CEO and Founder of Immortal Studios. Yesterday we launched our public campaign here on Wefunder and we are excited to introduce you to the spirit of Immortal and the business we believe we can build together. We look forward to being a part of this community, welcoming you into Immortal as owners. Immortal is a coming-together of many people – comic book fans, wuxia fans, the Asian and Asian American communities, Hollywood creatives, investor, martial artists, and lovers of great storytelling. We also have a stalwart Kickstarter community of 1200 and growing that, like Wefunder, took a chance on us and funded our first comic book which just released last month. They, like you, understand the power of crowdfunding to support independent projects and entrepreneurship. In the coming weeks, we look forward to sharing the various facets of Immortal – our business, content, our initiatives and our team members. And we welcome questions and comments! As an intro I want to share a bit of the philosophy behind why Immortal exists. The Changes We Wanted to SeeWuxia is an ancient genre from China that was spawned by a perennial need for heroes and the mystical powers of Kung Fu . As with all storytelling traditions, their interpretation is often influenced by the particular situations of writers working contemporaneously. Wuxia therefore has shifted with changes in culture. For instance, great stories from Ashes of Time to The Matrix to Star Wars all pay homage to Wuxia, even though each one is a very different story with very different reasons for being. Even though I have been an avid consumer of these stories I have not always agreed with what has been happening to Wuxia for many years. To wit: What started as Wuxia -- an examination of the relationship between virtue and fight has been sadly tilted toward senseless and gratuitous violence; I love the historical elements of these tales, but they also give the feeling that its power is behind us, as opposed to here with us, today; The role of personal transformation which has always been central in the reality and legends of these stories is now but a faint backdrop in favor of fancy looking kicks; The disregard for authenticity and knowledge of some of the genre's creators have made Wuxia into fighting, "Chop Socky," and anything and everything goes type of form.Because of the above, Immortal is creating our own take on the Wuxia genre, one certainly informed by our current moment, but we are also committed to returning Wuxia to its authentic roots. In our next post, we will discuss some of the big ideas that fuel our content and demonstrate why the Immortal storyverse will be one of the most unique storyworlds ever.
