If the fund has over 249 investors, it is regulated as a full-fledged mutual fund, which would dramatically increase costs and make the fund impractical as an investment vehicle.
Equity investments in startups have a long-term horizon, it typically takes 3-10 years for a successful company to exit, when it either gets acquired or has an IPO.
Each fund will return capital after any of its portfolio companies have a liquidation event.
After you invest in the fund, there will be no further capital calls.
Typically funds charge a carried interest fee ('carry'), a management fee, and sometimes an admin fee. These are standard fees for venture capital and private equity funds.
