First, let's search for pure quality aged rums and blend them to perfection. Bombarda Rum does not add extra sugars, caramels, or artificial colorings to any of our dark rum blends.  Second, lets display true age statements, so rum buyers know exactly what they are buying.  And, Finally, let's not cold filter the rums, which removes some of the purity of the natural rums created by the barrel aging process. 

Bombarda Rum carefully selects premium medium & full body dark rums from only the finest distilleries throughout the Caribbean & Latin America.  Once they are sourced, our master blenders in Amsterdam works meticulously with our dedicated crew to create Bombarda's Lost Barrel Blends. Each, with a proprietary combination of origins, age and expression.  

For the best in flavor, Bombarda only uses tropically aged pure rums that have matured in bourbon, sherry, whiskey & armagnac casks. Bombarda combines these rums in a way that is unique and flavorful. We don't use the controversial solera system, which is used by many brands n the market.

Many rum lovers may not understand the difference between the solera system of blending and real true blended rums, so let the truth be known!  

We are going to explain the term Solera and open up the history books. 

And, even as important as the blending method is the use of cold filtration during the bottle filling process. Bombarda's blenders and crew avoid cold filtering the rums.  Real blenders know this method strips out the flavor of the rums.   Consumers want rums in their natural state ! It's Bombarda's Badge of Honor! 

Rum Buyers Should Demand True age statements !

Let the truth be known ! Bombarda always displays the younger of the age of the blend on each of our labels and throughout our marketing.  Now let's review the solera system and why its NOT the best method of creating rums.  

What exactly is the solera system of blending vs. a true static blend ?, and how does the solera system effect age accuracy and flavor. 

Exactly what does the solera system of rum blending mean? And what of their age claims? To wit: the average rum buyer does not understand the difference between the leading $100 rum brand aged a minimum of 21 years, and a $40 brand stating - terms like Solera 23. From looking at the labels, the difference is clearly not obvious.  Countries like the U.S., now have strict requirements covering label age claims, enforcement is spotty and loopholes are rife.

The term “solera” originates from the region of Andalusia, Spain, known as the Sherry Triangle. Here, fortified wine goes through choreographed iterations of casking, blending and re-casking as a matter of traditional sherry production. 

A simplified model of solera aging is this: Picture five casks, each completely filled with wine and stacked vertically. To bottle a small portion, you’d extract (hypothetically) one-quarter of the wine from the bottom cask, before refilling that cask with the same amount of wine from the cask immediately above. This refilling process repeats all the way to the topmost cask, which is refilled with new, un aged wine.

Do this enough, and you’ll create a system where the topmost cask holds the youngest wine, while the bottommost barrel holds the oldest. The bottom cask is known as the solera, meaning “soil,” as it rests closest to the ground. All of the casks above it are known as criaderas (“cradles”). By convention, the set of all barrels (all of the criaderas and the solera casks) is known as a solera system.

Solera wine aging has two important differences compared to static aging. What you extract from the solera is remarkably consistent each time, and any differences in the character of the wine or individual casks average out over the system. As such, assigning an age to solera-aged sherry is tricky. At best, the sherry maker can calculate both an average and minimum age at extraction. However, these are estimates, and producers rarely make age claims, except for vintage production.

When it comes to solera aging of rums, nearly all producers are found in former Spanish colonies, such as Guatemala, Venezuela and Colombia—hence the influence of Spanish aging techniques. However, enthusiasts are challenging whether these rums are truly solera-aged and, more importantly, whether their implied age statements are accurate. 

Despite being tethered to a time-honored tradition in Spain, historically, solera aging was not a rum thing, So if rum producers who use the word “solera” on their labels and in their branding and aren’t adhering to the traditional solera method, how exactly are they aging and blending?

The solera method ignores the subtleties & character of individual barrels. Bombarda’s blending method chooses to celebrate each barrel’s individual character when crafting our final dark rum blends. Picking casks with specific flavors, finishes, origins & ages to create the perfect final blend, with each bottle delivering a consistent percentage of the blend’s unique rums. This is a long tradition in spirits-making, but it’s the exact opposite of true solera aging.

Another point of contention is age statements—or more accurately, what could be construed as an age statement. Both the validity of the solera term and implied age statements are the most common targets of criticism. Posts about solera-aged rums are filled with comments like, Aged for 15 solera years. Is that like dog years where 1=7 ?; Even the word “solera” is a lie.

Foursquare Rum Distillery’s Richard Seale, a vocal critic of solera aging, minces no words: “The law requires that an age statement name the youngest rum in the bottle. Any age claim beyond that is illegal,” he says. “Putting an isolated number on the label, which is then universally mistaken for a legitimate age claim, is a despicable, deceptive practice and should be condemned." While the average spirit buyer may not know or care about different aging techniques, the semantics matter to those working to elevate rum’s reputation and bring greater transparency to the category.

Why the cold filtering process kills the real flavor of a spirit, in this case, rum

It's simple,  Bombarda is against chill filtration, which yields a more expressive, flavorful rum.   Our focus is on qualities contributed typically by the casks. Not using chill filtration helps play up those qualities.  Master blenders know that texture matters more than you think.  Captain James' states: "It’s just as important as the flavor. It’s about the whole experience—the texture, the body, the finish".  All of our rum blends are meticulously designed to give the consumer and rum enthusiasts the essence of tasting our rum straight from the barrel. A Father & Son Bond that Led to What is Now Bombarda. The Story of A Revolutionary Spirit In The Making.

The true genesis of Bombarda manifested from a strong father & son bond inspired by a trip to the Dry Tortugas. Sharing rums with my dad for over 40 years fueled the drive and passion to create a rum brand that was bold and true and in a kick ass bottle that could truly embraces the history and adventure of rum!

Let me Share The Real Story of Bombarda Rum by Captain James

Growing up in South Florida was a memorable time of fun and adventure. My weekends were spent enjoying the beaches and reefs. Whether it be spending time surfing, diving or boating. i was out there enjoying the big blue!  Little did I know that those celebrated days of my youth would be the beginning of what manifested into a personal global wanderlust. It was and still is a burning passion to explore!

My father, George, or as we would all come to later call him by his nickname “ Papa George”, one of 9 children, was born in the Spring of 1919 and from a small town in Rhode Island.  A dedicated navy man and later a postman.

He was well mannered and kind to all those that he came in contact with and he inspired me to work hard, be honest with yourself and others, and enjoy every day as if it was your first & your last. He would often share his stories about the war and his friends! Notably, how they kept the faith and stayed alive during battle. Over the years, we enjoyed our time together always over a great bottle of rum. 

Sadly, my dad, “Papa George” passed away in April 2020 at over 101 years old and was surrounded by his family.  He left us graciously and never gave up that smile.  It was at that moment that got me thinking of what could I do to truly honor my dad for all that he loved and our time together over the years.  It was those last days in a veterans nursing home in Pembroke Pines, FL that I decided to do something that would embrace our story. I wanted to create a rum brand that would symbolize the many stories and times shared by my dad and I and for all the father's and sons alike to one day share in the same sprit. 

Like many sons in the past, I wanted to celebrate a man's life as a father, a grandfather, a husband, and a brother, and to embrace all that he has taught me about life, success & even failure. I wanted to honor his old navy days with his friends and somehow take this cause and create a rum brand that would be dedicated to honor, truth and a victory for life. For me, and most important, it's just my story of a father and son enjoying time slipping & sipping away.

I thought to myself, Im going to create a rum brand like no other and the rum better be damn good and I need a kick ass bottle ! Every time i would travel to surf, dive or explore, i would always grab a few bottles of rum to bring home for that special time that my dad and I shared just conversing about life and current times. Then it came to me, while traveling to the Dry Tortugas a few months back.  

Seeing that island and those black bold cannons on deck. Thats it!, a cannon bottle! I decided to go again to the Dry Tortugas and take in the island and to make this place part of the brand story. It was a place my dad and i never had a chance to visit together, but always wanted to.

The Rollout of the Brand Started with a Bang !

Day one, Bombarda Became a National Brand ! 

We are excited to say that Bombarda Rum’s Falconet Midnight Edition & Culverin Lost Barrel blends are available at 168 Total Wine stores throughout the U.S.  - in 28 States. Total Wine wanted us as an exclusive spirit direct partner in all states excluding Florida. In Florida we can sell to both on and off premise accounts. This exclusivity contract in all states ends in April 2023, setting us up for a strategic expansion with other regional distributors after the contract with Total Wine expires. 

Total Wine’s first purchase was for an impressive 3,456 cases. An incredible feat only accomplished by three brands prior.  Most brands need to be seasoned for at least 3 years to accomplish this type of relationship. This has given Bombarda Rum a head start in the retail market and a cost effective way of launching the brand nationally. Bombarda’s field team is currently hard at work expanding Bombarda’s presence in second-tier and third-tier mom and pop liquor stores, targeted restaurants and bars throughout Florida. 

In the short time that Bombarda has been on the market--we’re happy to say that we are currently in over 270 liquor store and restaurant / bar establishments throughout Florida and the USA as well as in regional retail chain in Alberta, Canada.

Bombarda Rum sources rums from the Caribbean, bottles & fills our blends in Amsterdam, Netherlands. We are based in Miami, Florida and operate a small office for sales and marketing. Strategically, this plan of attack provides lower overhead while we constantly seek for ways to expand sales and lower operating costs.  which continue to benefit our bottom line. 

Operating production in the Netherlands gives us access to the best blenders and filling houses operating in this space for over 250 years.  These experienced partners are opening the gates for a rapid Bombarda Europe expansion and distribution partners are now in place awaiting our first production run this summer 2022.


 Sales Growth Projections

Our chart features a blended amount for gross sales and and profits for our two main selling products - Culverin and Falconet Lost Barrel Blend. E commerce and our Limited edition sales are not included in these projections. Our recent addition of Drake Lost Barrel is selling in Canada and should be added to local distribution by 3Q 2022.

Sales of Bombarda Rum started May 2021 and began with our Total Wine National Rollout. Bombarda also started selling online delivering to all of the Continental US in May 2021.  Placements exceeded 2o0 locations from May 2021 - Dec 2021.  As of April 2022, Bombarda has added 117 more locations and a 13 store retail chain in Alberta, Canada. 130 locations in total as of 4./30/22 for a grand total of 330 locations. 

Our goal is to achieve 500 + location placements each year and based on our trajectory of growth, we believe we will achieve this goal in 2022.  Monthly orders from Breakthru Beverage, our Florida distributor continues to drive sales growth in Florida and commenced April 2022.  Breakthru has over 300 sales people across the state and the Bombarda team has embraced all of the regions with incentives and full support. 

Recently another rum brand exited their portfolio providing an opportune time to join the Breakthru family.  The sales team is very excited about Bombarda and is actively presenting the brand to all of the major rum buyers throughout the state of Florida.  

Controlled States and Bombarda Rum 

Bombarda has submitted our product to many of the controlled states and our application are pending. Each each state has a unique list of requirements ranging from in person presentations to waiting for an open window to apply for license.   Controlled states purchase the liquor from suppliers and distribute to retailers throughout the state. There are about 19 controlled states in USA.  We expect approval in PA and OH by 3Q 2022 and other states over the remaining course of 2022 and into 2023..

In 2021 -2022, The rum category in the U.S. continues to show signs of revitalization, with growth particularly in the premium category, despite the economic uncertainties brought about by the pandemic.

THE WHISKY CONNECTION

Many blenders, bartenders and producers alike, believe that barrel-aged dark rums should have crossover appeal for whiskey drinkers.  All of Bombarda Rum Blends are aged mostly in repurposed bourbon barrels to further cement that connection. Our expanded Limited Edition line will soon feature super premium rums aged in Armagnac and English Malt Whiskey barrels.

"Rum has complexity that could appeal to bourbon drinkers,” says Captain James,. To show off that complexity, Bombarda features an Old Fashioned on the cocktail section of the website, substituting our Falconet for whiskey, “which might catch a bourbon lover’s eye.”
Much of the interest in aged rums is fueled by non-rum drinkers beginning to explore quality rums. Drinkers of bourbon, for instance, are attracted by the vanilla and caramel notes of the sweeter rums. Certainly, it is no coincidence that Bombarda Rum is aged in bourbon barrels.

MIXOLOGY AT HOME - TREND SINCE COVID

Since Covid 19, most producers are encouraging at-home mixology and consumers are exploring more with their favorite spirit. For cocktails, aged dark rums can also be mixed as well as sipped. Another point, when many consumers think of rum, their minds automatically go to white rum, namely beach cocktails like a Piña Colada. OFF PREMISE BOOST

At Jensen’s Liquors in Miami, 2020 rum sales were up 22% over 2019, but the category’s percentage of overall revenue at the six-store chain declined. “In 2019, rum was 14% of our total revenue, but it made up 12% in 2020,” says Kevin Cruz, general counsel for the store and a licensed beverage alcohol attorney. He attributes this change to an increase in the chain’s sales across the board and a trend toward super-premium rums. I’m noticing that a lot of high-end craft rum is starting to make its way to consumers,” Cruz says. “Whereas usually it was the flavored $20-$30 rums, now it’s the $50-$60 bottles.

Bombarda Rum Operates within a 3-tier system

(1)The rums are sourced from distilleries in the West Indies & Latin America and is distilled & tropically matured at point of origin and delivered to our blenders in Amsterdam. 

(2) Bombarda exports the finished rums from the Netherlands to warehouses in South Florida, with inventory always on hand located in warehouses in Rotterdam, Netherlands where it is then sold directly to distributors and wholesalers who operate in their respective markets.

(3) Our distributors offer logistics, warehousing, a sales team, and product delivery. Distributors sell directly to liquor stores/retailers (off-premise), as well as to restaurants, hotels, bars, country clubs (on-premise) etc.

7 months ago - Dark Victory ! An assemblage of 8-15 year old aged rum from Latin America and the Caribbean; the combination of regions and styles unveils a complex dram. Flavors of dark molasses, allspice, roasted and dried fruits are the centerpiece in ex-Bourbon barrel aged rum. A great addition to classic rum cocktails, but it will also wow served neat.
