Our Story:The idea for Active Defender came out of our own team’s experience in managing emergencies of various situations- whether it was a lost student on a field trip, a medical emergency, or a military operation. The common threads between all of these responses were 1) the need for effective communication, and 2) the need for information. Access to these two things would determine how swiftly and effectively the emergency was handled and safety restored.  This got us thinking:Our Mission: Our mission is to equip every school with Active Defender; ensuring swift, decisive actions during crises. By bridging the communication gap and providing complete transparency, we empower staff and first responders with the right tools for effective response. Most schools today have plenty of security systems in place; alarms, cameras, even uniformed security officers. But these measures do not address the need for communication and information when a threat is present. Studies have shown that even when an alarm sounds,  94% of school and staff don’t know where the specific threat is located.   - A: Russell, I appreciate your thoughtful question regarding the safety protocols in place for our Active Defender system. We recognize that in any safety solution, particularly those dealing with emergency situations such as active shooters, there are inherent risks. Ensuring the highest level of safety and security is our utmost priority, and we have endeavored to build multiple safeguards into the Active Defender system. The possibility that a would-be shooter might gain access to a teacher's phone is a potential vulnerability we've considered. We understand that if the phone is unlocked, they could potentially access Active Defender. This risk, while it exists, is weighed against the significantly larger risk of a teacher not having immediate access to the Active Defender system and not being able to quickly get to safety or alert others. With Active Defender, we have streamlined the alert process to be as quick and straightforward as possible, forgoing a secondary verification step. This decision was made after an extensive risk assessment, where we determined the added time and potential confusion in a high-stress situation far outweighed the potential reduction in risk from a shooter making a false report. Consider this: an active shooter situation is chaotic and time-critical. A shooter getting access and unlocking a teacher's phone while also needing to navigate to an unfamiliar app while under duress would be difficult. But if they choose to try and do this, it would draw them away from continuing to shoot. This would allow additional time for responders to engage. Furthermore, a false report, for example, reporting a shooter on the west side of the campus while the phone is located on the east, would raise immediate suspicions and would be treated as such by the response teams. We're continuously reviewing and improving the security protocols and safeguards for Active Defender, and we'll ensure to take into account your concerns as we further refine our systems.
