RECKLESS SPIRITS is a a metaphysical, multilingual POC best friend comedy for a bleak era!

SYNOPSIS: A gender-fluid Latine performance artist and a neurotic Asian American therapist are led by a series of uncanny circumstances into a world of ancestor spirits, psychics, and a cult leader who is threatening to tear their friendship apart.

In a time when the world is full of chaos and uncertainty, RECKLESS SPIRITS playfully asserts diverse creators need to see ourselves in stories that are joyous and uplifting, rather than eternally traumatic. It is a deeply genre story – part comedy, part animation, part fantasy, part magic. If you enjoy over-the-top Chinese kung-fu or ghost movies, physical comedy, absurdist black humor, and K-Pop, this is a movie for you!

RECKLESS SPIRITS has received financial and in-kind support from a successful Kickstarter campaign ($102,000), as well as support and recognition from: Hillman Grad, Open Television, Northwest Film Forum, Full Spectrum Features, Washington Filmworks, 4Culture, Artist Trust, Koerner Camera, and and San Francisco Transgender Film Festival's Dream Commission Grant. The project was a 2023 NewFest New Voices Filmmaker Grant Semi-Finalist; it was invited to apply to the second round of the 2025 Sundance Feature Film Labs and the 2025 AntiGravity Productions' Screenwriters Camp.

LOW-BARRIER TO RETURN ON INVESTMENT

Because the majority of our funds raised thus far do not need to be returned, we project that only $150,000 of the project's overall $300,000 budget will need to be recouped in order for RECKLESS SPIRITS to make a profit. Due to our successful Kickstarter campaign, we have potential distribution through Tubi and are seeking other avenues for independent distribution.

MULTI-CULTURAL, MULTI-MARKET APPEAL

RECKLESS SPIRITS is a film for spiritualists and skeptics alike. Propelled by the success of absurdist comedy films such as EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, ALL AT ONCE (2022), BARB AND STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR (2021), and PROBLEMISTA (2024), this film speaks to a BIPOC and LGBTQ+ audience that’s long been told to only exist within the margins -- with a focus on universal themes like identity, exploitation, non-conformity, and personal power.

ETHICAL, INTENTIONAL FILMMAKING

As a Director, Vee centers care and modeling healthy filmmaking practices show that they can be the on-set norm. Transparency, safety, community accountability, along with ongoing and informed consent are key tenants of the RECKLESS SPIRITS production.

TRULY DIVERSE CREW

The 30-person crew for the 12-minute short film proof-of-concept for RECKLESS SPIRITS was almost exclusively comprised of individuals who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and/or living with a disability. This is an ideal we plan to mirror once in the production of the feature as well.

SUSTAINABILITY & WASTE REDUCTION

Our producers will lead a robust sustainability plan that will minimize waste, compost and recycle, and work with all departments to embed a zero waste mindset into the entire production.
