"The Pixar of Africa?" Maybe

From Lagos Nigeria, we pursued our passion—to share wholesome stories and creative moving animation art. Africa has MANY unique multidimensional stories, rich heritage of sound and art styles, yet to be explored in mainstream animation. However, the animation industry in Africa at the time only lacked talent, financial resources and local policies, especially here at home.

Fast-forward to today. Magic Carpet have

  • trained hundreds of talents,
  • secured partnerships and/or delivered productions for Cartoon Network, Sesame Street, Microsoft, MasterCard, etc—producing hundreds of hours of globally enjoyed animated content
  • won many awards, and have recently been invited to help in the formation of government policies for animation
  • become a hub of global animation outsourcing and a center of community for Animation Africa
We are not just creating films, we are building an industry, bringing hope to a continent and uniting global communities.

The Passport of Mallam Ilia

The Passport of Mallam Ilia, is an animated feature film, an adaptation of the cherished 1960 novel by legendary African author Cyprian Ekwensi.

What happens when love bumps into politics or when ambition disguise as justice?
Gritty, Adventure, Action, Thriller | 120 mins | PG 13 Style comparison: "Prince of Egypt", "Lion King" Setting: 19th-20th century West Africa, Saudi Arabia, Chad Script Language: English

The Passport of Mallam Ilia is not just any tale of love, adventure, revenge and redemption, it also serves as a kind of social commentary on colonialism. Not one that points fingers at a particular race, but one that guides us all within to our shared human emotions: Love, hate, ambition; our search for identity and our quest for personal freedom within oppressive structures.

Set in the 19th century in Kano, a city in West Africa, the Story is a tale of love and conflict; of a young man, Ilia, whose heart was bound to Zara. He fought and defeated many strong men to win her hand. After Zara was murdered and Ilia became hellbent on vengeance, Ilia must now fight and defeat himself if he must love, or live, again.

More than a Story—a shared experience

The book's massive success has left behind a large inbuilt fan-base, eager for the film. extra-spring board for what is already an amazing work! Evidently the story has a global and cross-generational appeal

More than a novel, it was a shared experience for millions. Through our work, it will reach more millions for many more generations. We hold the licence, and were already years into the production at the time of this Netflix post.
